    Fractured Ribs

    Hi folks,
I got the worst catapolt in 12yrs of windsurfing on Friday two days ago.
I was overpowered on a 4.2 (forecast was 100kph gusts and 50knots) i dont know it was very windy...

I went to overtake my buddy and - jumped around 14 foot off a small 3 foot wave and caught a massive gust and tried to sheet out i think and my mate said i went a bit head to wind... anyway i got the catapolt worst yet (10 times worse than when i broke my boom in half) and got slammed super hard from a height into the board or boom - my initial thought was oh no ive cracked my spine in two from the sheer force) i wiggled my toes and feet and legs and they were moving ok luckily i was wearing a dakine impact vest... and a helmet... I couldnt swim .... i couldnt breathe for a while maybe 45 seconds.....my right arm wouldnt work cauase it hurt the ribs and i could only lie on my back and kick my legs and backstroke with my left arm and after maybe 15 mins the waves washed me in
anyway the xrays said it was a fracture which is good as i thought i had done internal damage and really could not breathe properly... still cant take a deep breath... so panicked a bit because of the breathing and impact (worried about internal damage)

    MY QUESTION:
When i breathe deep which i try not to: i feel a rib move that didnt b4 please plesae has anyone experienced this because i know thats not normal for a fracture.... i dont know im gonna go and see the best doctor in my town next week... but i think i have slipped rib syndrome... has anyone here ever got it??? ive never injured a rib windsurfing (had wiplash from a catpolt)

My injury was my lowest rib next to my spine above my hips all the way up to abouut a foot above my hips...

any advice would be good - if hadnt had the impact vest on id say id be up ***** creek - saying that i got a nasty feeling this isnt just a fractured rib.... afterwalds i felt bubbles in the area:

its my last 3 ribs on the right hand side....

any advice would be great - im in Irleand and perhaps theres a specialist who deals with this cause i think it could be quite a specialist area...

i kitesurf now a lot - but when its nuking i windsurf... ive always thought windsurfing is safe but guys id advise get an impact vest ... unless mine didnt work but im sure it did cause it coversa the area... god only knows how id be if the vest wasnt there... if it was cross of and tide going out... could be a coast guard issue... just after you take a knock like that ...u lose all strength and ability to swim within the crack of a mas or boom and split second..

    Even farting is extremely painful

I've done ribs twice. Doc said most "broken" ribs are torn cartilage. It is very painful, and if you break the bone supposed to be even worse. First time I did not rest and it took months to heal and rib still floats a bit and sticks out. Second time I rested completely and was sailing 3 weeks later. So rest.
P.S.don't catch a cold or watch anything funny

As Maker says...rest as much as possible. Took me weeks to get better as I just did not let them heal.

"Cracked my ribs" sailing before Christmas 2010. In quotes because I don't know whether I did. Couldn't sleep at all and ended up going to A&E on Christmas morning (an education in itself), and learnt at that A&E at least it's no longer the practice for them to X-ray you and strap you up -- so you never find out exactly what you've done. Instead you're given heavy amounts of co-codamol or ibuprofen -- 600 mg of ibuprofen twice a day in my case. Spent six weeks not sailing and feeling zombiefied thanks to the ibuprofen, then began to feel OK.

i am just getting match fit after a rib damage lay off - went into the mast going full pelt around a gybe when the fin grounded - after a couple of days of excruciating pain i found using the spa pool or just floating in the pool at the gym helped me feel better quicker and obeying my body when it came to pain and doing lots of what didn't hurt helped - 8 weeks off the water for me and if any of you have shares in voltarol then early happy xmas from me. if you are having difficulty breathing then agree with all who say you should really see a doctor. hope you feel better soon.

I'm pleased to say I am sneezing again with only moderate pain after 4 weeks since crackage. Before that, any hint of a sneeze left me doubled up on the floor. For the record, if you feel a sneeze coming, exhale hard through your nose and it will sometimes go away. Keep drinking orange juice to keep you clear of colds. It sounds pretty major what you have done, but maybe this is your first experience of rib damage and you are still giddy at the discomfort!! Next time you will be far more complacent. You've had the xrays and youve got a fracture, yes it will click over itself and feel like you have a punctured lung. You wont be able to sleep at night and laughing will make you cry. Dont panic...it will pass and you will be stronger for it. Keep safe.

i was told that you cant sneeze with your eyes open - this was a a few years ago when i had rib damage and flu at the same time - but i keep forgetting to try it

this could of course be a load of rubbish
