since i use it with a Vandal Flux 370
and it is a perfect match.
the 5.0 also is my biggest sail
    paired with a '09 S-1 4.3.

the problem is that ben decided
to skip the 5.0 size this year
and i have doubts that the 4.8
would provide the same get going
like my current sail (that is very efficient).

an alternative would be the Blade Pro 5.0
where i would need my 16cm tip extension.
that's the solution i would favour
    at the moment.

I personally don't like oversimplified sails. For me it would still be the Blade.

with 'oversimplified', do you mean the new Pro technology?
(i.e. less panels, thin material etc.)

and you would go for the classic Blade?
    (very nice Sail indeed)

No, sorry I realise now that when written down my thought was not clear.

I like sails with stability and power, forward hand pulling and that pin down the board, down the mast pressure.

So I am not convinced that four batten are for me. Also I have the feeling that less panelling detracts from controlling the depth of the draft forward like I like, it may not be so but that is what I prefer.

I favour the Blade or the Blade Pro would be what I'd like once I can see it.
I could get the Blade Pro in 5.7 for the Naish wave board. (if ever the wind returns here?)

ok, i understand. regarding the profile depth
in the luff area i also had some skepsis,
but on the pictures the profile looks
very ok - even without a luff panel.

the S-1 was very allround until 2010
and then ben started to spezialise it
    to sideoff wavesailing (since then
    they were in orange-red colour).
didn't like the '11 model for it
was not stable enough for my
liking - had the '11 Blade instead.
until '14 they got more stable
and with a bigger range again,
    but kept the characteristics
    of a higher point-of-effort
    vs. the locked down Blade.
liked the S-1 over the Blade
    for the direct feeling
    of the tight mast pocket
    made for rdm's.

is it time to try the Blade again..?
(would require my mast tip extension)

edit - or should i risk to go with the S-1 4.8
    as my biggest sail..?
    (in comparison with the 5.0
it would even better fit to my 370rdm)

Difficult to tell, what's your next size down from 5.0?

It is very possible that you'd find the 4.8 lacking in pull compared to what you are used to in the S1 you have, it may be true that this sails have larger range, that they "inflate" being softer and maybe its the same result as a 5.0...
But then if you go for either of the '15 blades you may feel you have more power than you want. Regardless, given your weight
I'd go for the assurance of the blade even if in means adjusting to more power than you are expecting.

Also in my case I get or study the sails I want first and then get the mast that suits. Which means I may have more mast sizes than I need but I think of them as backup or as having the luxury of rigging two sail sizes from the start and then I'm free from faffing about with the change of sail or components for the remainder of the day. Kind of like a mini windsurf center, wind changes and I come to ashore to make a swap.

hi, my concept is 'less is more'
and i'm very happy with my 4.3/5.0 combi.
both set on Vandal Flux 370rdm
    masts (i have C60 + C100) and i can
rigg both sails at the same time.

my minimal travel set is just the 5.0
and my Quatro quad - that covers
most conditions from 3-4 Bft schlogging
in waves up to 6 Bft wave or b&j.
    Attachment 10592

for the good days with 5+ Bft the
new 4.8 should be an improvement
    with better sail handling.
edit - in fact it could be perfect
for what i consider as ideal
    conditions (5-6 Bft and sideoff
    glassy waves.. :-)

on the lighter days i'm currently
very happy with the S-1 5.0
and i don't want to lose much
    in early planing.
    i don't mind schlogging around
in 4 Bft when others are on 6.0,
but i definitely want to efficiently
pump into plane when a 5 Bft
gust arrives or to get a wave.
    waterstart threshold could
    also be an issue.

    in comparison, the Blade 5.0
would be just right in size
and would also be a good
    complement to the '09 4.3
which is also a 5 batten sail.
here i would have to use
    my 16cm top extension
    and would risk to get
    some wrinkles because
    of the 370 mast.
    edit - the '10 S-1 5.0 definitely
got wrinkles as the 370 mast
was too soft for this sail.

the '14 S-1 works very well
on the 370rdm since it was
    designed to have this option
(edit - and the Vandal mast
    seems to be slightly stiffer
    compared to Severne).
too bad that ben had skipped
this size for the new ones...
