Boats are much bigger. Once you have made one – or a fake to that shape – you can then take a mould off it.

Windsurfers use to be fully made in moulds but the production runs were much greater then.

What the Cobra factory revolutionised was accurate CNC blank shaping and that consistent blank could then be laminated by hand to various constructions.

Hand lamination can seem labour-intensive but if labour costs are low and the environment is warm enough for consistent lamination then you are in the right place.

The development of a production line process for making hand laminated boards with consistent shapes and lowish labour costs put the bigger roto-moulding guys out of business and could also outprice smaller custom 'shed-based' builders.

Some Chinese factories are trying to compete for this market, and are slowly getting better at that. Which is why some brands have now moved there – for a better unit price, or else shorter lead in times.

*I hear on the grapevine that the main issue with the Cobra factory nowadays is that they are very busy with a broad variety of products, so manufacturers have to book up factory time well in advance.

*If anyone knows different, then please correct me.

making comparisons between boat/yacht building and board manufacture is a bit chalk/cheesy

composite boats are generally made in open molds using polyester resins and chopped strand fibreglass, boards are mostly epoxy resin with a woven fibreglass/kevlar/carbon whatever mat.

you can also use a mold on a board for vacuum layup, as well as compression methods. vacuum bagging over a core is a long winded process not suitable for mass production.

the accuaracy of core to mold is down to how the ratio of resin to chosen fibre is applied at the wetting out stage, if you follow the technical recomendations then you will get the same thickness and strength of finished composite every time. from the sound of the severne article they have spent a lot of time getting this right. my experience of cobra boards is that only starboard are consistant, other brands have been hit and miss (including holes, dry patches & soft spots from new).

the caveats i will fall back on are that not all board brands QC requirements are equal, materials are changing with environmental concerns and my bestest board ever (so far) was a cobra factory RRD

One CNC machine can produce multiple shapes whereas a mould can only produce one shape.
